In Little Western, Bertie helped both Thomas and Oliver deal with an emergency at the quarry which involved two workmen injured by a rockslide. Bertie's role is to transport workmen to the site in rescuing the two who were injured in the accident. Both Toby and Percy were at the time on the other side of the line which leads to the quarry. He was used by Sodor Nightly News reporter, Charles West for an advertisement in Storm Report during his break time in reporting one of the largest storms ever recorded on the island in 1983. During A Stranger in Need, Bertie stopped to see that a car chase involving the police was heading towards the top station on Thomas' Branch Line. Fortunately, Percy managed to stop the bad driver just in time and the police arrested the man on injuring a person and didn't stop to help her. Bertie had a non-speaking role in Ruffled Feathers just outside Tidmouth station where Sheffield was thanked by Oliver's coaches for a nicer run through The Little Western.
Bertie is an AEC Regal "T class" London Country Area bus, built between 1929 and 1935.
