The Breakdown Train is a freight car that deals with rescuing engines and rolling stock after an accident has occurred on different parts of the NWR. The Skarloey Railway also has one of these to rescue both engines and rolling stock after their accidents have occurred on a piece of rail line. It was built in 1906.

North West Railway

The first use of the Breakdown Train was in Limits where Duck brought it in to rescue Donald after he slammed his buffer beam into the rear of a brake van as of helping Patrick up the hill with his goods train to which his driver was right to not collect the Scottish twins' goods train with Patrick's or having too much weight to go up Gordon's Hill at the same time. Thomas later collected it to rescue Percy after he was derailed by the trucks on icy rails and collided with a lorry which was in Comfort Zone. In Little Engines, BoCo helped put Diesel back onto the rails after he derailed across the track by the trucks and nearly fell down a steep cliff. Diesel sent the train to rescue Barry's trucks in A Troubled Engine following his anger at them for being rude to James and Bear brought this to the level crossing outside East Knapford where Gordon's express had collided with a rude lorry on the crossing. The Breakdown Train also appeared in two episodes during 2009 and one in 1923.

Skarloey Railway

Rheneas collected the narrow-gauge railway's Breakdown Train to rescue Skarloey from the water after he fell in with his goods train by colliding with a rude lorry. It was Duke who later brought the Breakdown Train following an accident on Rusty by Sir Handel's runaway train. The Breakdown Train has appeared in many episodes as well in both Sodor: The Early Years and Sodor: The Modern Years.
