Bygones is the sixteenth episode of Season 3, and the thirty-fourth episode overall.
Plot
Edward is travelling back to Wellsworth the morning after The Fat Controller recounted the 1923 accident. He stops outside a signal box where he meets Thomas, who tells Edward some game changing evidence. Later, Thomas arrives at Knapford and tells Gordon about the information he holds about the night of the incident; he was shunting when Alfred passed him with his train. He saw some sleepers on one of the flatbeds move, whistled a warning, but unfortunately Alfred didn't hear him. Gordon is shocked and asks Thomas why he didn't bring this up earlier.
Alfred, meanwhile, is travelling with a goods train when he derails at the crossover outside Killdane. Sean sees the accident and calls for help. Gordon is at Maron station when the stationmaster tells him what has happened. Gordon takes the train to a siding and comes back for Alfred. The arguing is finally over when Gordon apologises to Alfred for the misconception. At Maron, Sir Topham Hatt tells to Alfred that the railway inspectorate in London will re-open the case, in light of this new evidence. Gordon also allows Alfred to take the express the rest of the way.
