Christopher Awdry was essentially the reason the Railway Series was written. During the war, he was ill with the measles at the age of 3, so his father, Wilbert Awdry (The Thin Clergyman), told him a story about Edward. After the war, the first book The Three Railway Engines was published, and Wilbert would then proceed to write 25 more books. Christopher eventually took over his role and wrote an additional 18.
