Diesels and Dukes is the fifth episode of Season 2, and the seventeenth episode overall.

Plot

The Skarloey Railway is preparing for a visit from the Duke of Sodor. However, Skarloey unfortunately breaks down while pulling a passenger train, and is sent to the works for a boiler rebuild, as his tubes have collapsed. While there he meets Duke, who is being overhauled. As a result of this, Rusty is brought in to help, but has an accident with Sir Handel's runaway trucks. Sir Handel doesn't realise this until Peter Sam points it out at the next station.

Both engines arrive at the scene, only to find Duke bringing the breakdown crane after being overhauled, which both surprises and comforts Sir Handel and Peter Sam. Skarloey is mended and home in time for the Duke of Sodor's visit, which is a great success.

Characters

Trivia

  • Railway Series references include; Duck and Dukes.
  • This is the only episode to air on a Thursday.
  • This episode marks James' only speaking role in Season 2.
  • This episode contradicts later events in the series:
    • The episode states that Duke arrived in the Skarloey Railway after Rusty. But later in Ivo's Number establishes that the engines are numbered after they arrived, as Duncan is the engine after Rusty and later added that Adeline as 7th before her accident. The only exception is Ivo Hugh as the engines decided to let him take that number after many years passed.
    • Peter Sam has his new giesel funnel before Rusty arrived, but later episodes state that he didn't get until after Rusty arrived.
    • The Skarloey engines have their TV series colors, but also like in "Ivo's Number", the engines before Duke's arrival had the Skarloey Railway uniform colors from the Railway Series.

Goofs

  • When Rusty gets offended, he jerks backwards.
