Douglas the Brave is the third episode of Season 4, and the thirty-ninth episode overall.

Plot

Donald has been ordered to go to the North West Railway on the Island of Sodor, but Douglas wants to go with him. Spurred on by Neil, they create a plan.

Douglas takes another steam engine's, 47288, goods train from the steel mill down to Gretna. On the way, he gets delayed by the Night Mail, which almost puts their plan behind schedule. However, they manage to meet the time frames, and once there, Douglas' crew paint over his numbers and they wait for Donald. Once Donald arrives, the twins set off together.

A diesel passes them on their way, but he doesn't raise the alarm, as they reach Barrow without further troubles. However, the twins decide they need names to differentiate themselves. They recall their first names of their first drivers, Douglas Anderson and Donald McTavish respecitvely. At Barrow-in-Furness, Donald's crew paint over his numbers and they head to Tidmouth where they are to meet Sir Charles Topham Hatt and an Inspector at the station. The Inspector sees both engines, and thinks this is a mistake, but in the end The Fat Controller lets both engines stay. At the end of the story, they also mention that Neil has been preserved at the National Railway Museum in York.
