Flying Fish is the ninth episode of Season 5, and the sixty-first episode overall.

Plot

At Kellsthorpe Road, Eric meets Sheffield, as the latter is taking over duties on the branch so Eric can have have his five yearly service. Eric tells Sheffield about the delivery for the Flying Kipper and the rest of the jobs that need to be done while he is away. Sheffield later arrives at the docks with a goods train, and the trucks talk about his way of handling them.

That evening, Sheffield picks up the fish train and takes them up the line. On the hill towards Rolf's Castle, the trucks snap a coupling, and they runaway towards the old shed at Kirk Ronan docks. It turns out an old brake van, from the Wellsworth and Suddery railway days, named Brian is in there.

The next morning, Bear brings the Breakdown Train to the docks and Sheffield helps the workmen to clear up the mess. Soon, The Fat Controller arrives and speaks to Sheffield about the trucks, who then proceeds to help get Brian out of the shed. Sheffield vouches for Brian's restoration, to which The Fat Controller agrees. That evening, The Fat Controller speaks to Sheffield about the trucks and Brian being his new brake van. Sheffield is grateful, and has to manage the branch for another week, as Eric's service takes longer than expected.

One day, Eric returns from the works with Brian and he shunts Brain onto the back of Sheffield's goods train. As he departs, the trucks start giggling. Brian asks about this, and the trucks tell Brain they've got to Sheffield. Brian tells the trucks about Sheffield's support for his restoration, and there would be a lot of rebuilding for the trucks and Sheffield to get along.
