The Lucky Ones is the first episode of the mini-series Barry the Rescue Engine. It is released as the forty-ninth episode overall.

Plot

A foreword informs the viewers of a scrapyard in Wales called Barry Island Scrapyard, and that one of the engines was saved and brought to the North West Railway.

One spring morning, James is angry because he has to take a goods train to Barrow, but Gordon reminds him that if he didn't have any trains to pull, he would be in a very sorry situation. Just then, The Fat Controller arrives and tells James about a very important delivery for Crovan's Gate. James is confused about what the delivery might be, and he ponders this all the way to Barrow. Once there, the yardmaster tells James that Patrick's goods train is late, and that 'he' will be on two well wagons. Once Patrick arrives, everything makes sense, as James lays his eyes on a rusted steam engine, 78018. On the return trip, they pass through Henry's Tunnel and on the other side Diesel is helping some workmen weld the track together. The noise and sparks cause 78018 to mistake it for a scrapper's torch, and he gets slightly frightened. James reassures him and they get to Crovan's Gate without anymore events.

At the works, Sir Charles Topham Hatt arrives. He is to aid the volunteers on 78018's restoration, as he is an 'expert on steam engines'. James remembers what Gordon said, and realises he is lucky to be part of the North West Railway.
