Hard Work is the fifth episode in Season 4, and the forty-first episode overall.
One morning, Duncan was bringing a train of slate down the line from the Slate Quarry to Crovan's Gate. The Slate Trucks pushed him off the rails and into a fence after he bumped them for taunting him about a song back where Peter Sam was waiting with his passengers. Duncan was severely derailed and shocked as Rusty came to help him, but Peter Sam arrived very early at the crash site. The Scottish narrow-gauge engine was angry because Peter Sam was a bit early than usual including his special funnel being new. After arriving at the shed, Duncan was still cross and said that he was all right to the engineer without any damage as Duke said they still need to check him over. Peter Sam arrived and Duncan said about the incident that morning before Duke diplomatically said about Peter Sam as a hard worker.
Duncan was on his passenger run when the Scottish engine couldn't charge up the hill. His right cylinder's lining is badly snapped due to the derailment he had that morning by the trucks. The guard from Duncan's train stopped Peter Sam who was on a supply train to the quarry at the station of Cros-ny-Cuirn. After the long conversation, Peter Sam and Duncan went up on the hill until they were stopped at Glennock with Peter Sam saying that Rheneas is down at his station. At that station, Peter Sam was uncoupled from behind and Rheneas went around upwards to haul Duncan's train. Both engines had a talk over the incident that morning with Duncan making an apology. Rheneas and Duncan took the passenger train back to base.
