Sheffield, formerly known as Sixteen, is a rather blunt but work-ready engine.

Bio

Sheffield is an Industrial Engine, built for a steelworks in Sheffield on the mainland. One rainy day, he, as Sixteen, passed a danger board with the help of some trucks. As a result, he tumbled down a bank, cab over wheels. He was damaged severely, and relegated to the back of the shed. There, some workmen took some of his parts to repair the other engines. That was when Sheffield realized 'just how serious his predicament was.' Sometime later, Sixteen was bought by a heritage railway, restored, and given his name Sheffield after the location of the steelworks he used to work at.

After Wilbert's visit, Stephen Topham Hatt purchased Sheffield from his old heritage railway. On his first day, he was so rough with his trucks that he banged a hole in their brake pipe, having to use James's bootlace trick. However, because of his experience on a heritage railway, he knew how to handle coaches well, which confused the other engines further. He also rescued a runaway Mike from falling off the chute by positioning his trucks full of sand directly under it.

Later, Donald witnessed Sheffield both tell a grade of steel simply by looking at it, and scold a careless Henry upon noticing that his load was loose. This was the final piece Donald needed to solve Sheffield. He found both Sheffield and Duck at a station, and then proceeded to reveal Sheffield's identity, which the austerity tank confirmed.

Sometime later, Sheffield had to take over on the Kirk Ronan branch for Eric as the large tank engine went for his five yearly service. The trucks caused trouble along the line with a runaway which they crashed into the harbor shed and banged into a rusty Brian. After Brian was restored, he was permanently assigned to Sheffield.

Sheffield listened carefully to Duck's instructions to having to work half of the Arlesburgh branch line after Hugh rammed into the bridge. He stated that Thomas and James' theories were useful in solving the mystery of who broke the bridge in the first place.

In Winds of Change, Sheffield and Henry were talking to Shane at the engine sheds at Barrow-in-Furness. After Henry left, Sheffield told Shane the reasons diesels replaced steam engines. He was at the level crossing speaking to George with both Toby first and later, Mavis after the Troublesome Trucks made her collide with the rude steamroller. In Taking Care of Christmas, he talked to Iris about Christmas and how she should be celebrating it rather than not taking part in it for the sake of the NWR.

In Caden (the episode), Sheffield was assigned to work in the titular character's yard after failing due to contaminated fuel (he had also done this when Caden was in for service in 1996). The two argued for a bit until Miss Hatt reassigned him back to the Wellsworth Branch, which is where he had been working for the latter half of Season 2.

In Two Heritage Engines, flashbacks reveal that Sheffield has been bothered about missing his friends from his old heritage railway. This lead to him oftentimes being distracted, which ultimately led to a runaway and a subsequent derailment at Brendam docks. Geoff brought him to the works to be mended.

In An Elusive Quarry, Sheffield leaves the works and begins working in Wellsworth yards. He is also repainted NWR blue and is given a new giesl ejector. He meets Rowan, who has recently arrived on the North Western, and the two catch up. He later assigns Rowan his first train.

Basis

Sheffield is a Hunslet Austerity saddle tank engine, much like Wilbert.

Sheffield's former number was carried by a real Hunslet Austerity, the real 16 wears a similar livery to his former livery and while there is no record of a steelworks on the railway, the engine had replaced an engine (ironically carrying the same number) that had an accident similar to Sheffield's. Hornby has created a model of this engine.

Livery

Sheffield was originally painted orange-brown back when he worked at the steelworks on the Mainland. He was later painted green after being bought by a heritage railway and wore this livery when he came to Sodor. In 2012, Sheffield was painted NWR blue after he had an accident on the Brendam Branch Line, and after hearing Peter Sam talk endlessly about it he decided to try out a Giesl ejector.
